Health Insurance FAQs

Can I keep my current doctors?

Before you sign up for any health insurance plan check the network to make sure the doctors you prefer to use are in the network. The network is made up of healthcare professionals who have agreed to provide services to a particular carrier for a specific rate. If your doctors are important to you, you need to choose accordingly.

What is the formulary?

The formulary is the list of drugs that a given health insurance plan will cover. They are arranged by tiers depending on how much a prescription will cost. Some drugs may have no copay and others may have a deductible. Generic is almost always less expensive.

What is managed care?

Managed care is a type of health insurance plan that manages your health care. Depending on what type of plan you choose, these plans can be quite restrictive. The three most common are HMO, PPO, and POS. With an HMO you can not visit doctors and other healthcare professionals outside the network except for an emergency. You also have a primary care doctor who manages your care. The other two types are less restrictive, but it will always be less expensive to get treatment within the network.
